Local Sustainable Economic Development - Research & Practice

Ben Gurion University of the Negev
December 9-10, 2013
Local Sustainable Economic Development (LSED) is an emerging approach to local & regional development. While traditional approaches to local & regional development in peripheral regions and communities operated within the conceptual framework of ‘trickle down’ economies, recent evidence have questioned their basic assumptions and empirical evidences. Moreover, an increasing number of national and regional government agencies, NGOs and local municipalities are seeking development strategies that will ensure the wellbeing of local communities and the environment. Thus, there is greater need to define strategies for an LSED approach, to identify and evaluate its impact, and gradually develop critical conceptual framework for LSED research & practice.

Recent work in the Project Wealth partnering regions has placed a focus on few fields of action: tourism, creative industries, local food production and regional well being measurements. Thus investing in research and practice within these fields as well as the links between them can produce new insights and highlight LSED strategies and approach.

The WealthR workshop will take place on December 9-10, 2013 at Ben-Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel. The workshop will provide an opportunity for WealthR (Euro Med WEALTH LSED Research Group) participants – together with local researchers, practitioners and policymakers – to present and discuss recent empirical LSED studies, and to develop new approaches to LSED research & practice. The workshop's structure is aimed at encouraging the consolidation of policy recommendations on the aforementioned themes:

- Regional measures of well being
- Creative industries as drivers of LSED
- Sustainable tourism
- Local food systems
